Google has been accused many times for collecting the data of its users, and now the Dutch government has decided to limit the use of the Chrome browser and the Chrome OS operating system in this country. This action has been taken to protect the privacy of students.

 

According to the report of Bleeping Computer website, the Dutch authorities in an unprecedented move have limited the use of the above platform until the second half of 2023 and will continue until the task of collecting the information of Dutch users, especially students of this country, is determined by Google.

The Dutch government has said that Google collects the information of teenage users and sells it to advertising companies, which is not allowed by law. Therefore, due to the lack of transparency in this regard, Google is forced to limit the use of the Chrome browser and the Chrome OS operating system in schools.

The Minister of Education of the Netherlands has said that the country should have taken the necessary measures to deal with the collection of information of Dutch students in order to protect their privacy. This ministry is also negotiating with companies like Microsoft to have the necessary transparency regarding the collection of user information. However, it seems that Google has agreed during the negotiations with the Dutch authorities to provide a new version for Chrome and Chrome OS next year that will be compatible with the rules of the European Union.

According to new EU rules, student data must be stored on cloud servers within Europe, and search engines Google and YouTube must also place restrictions on students.

Of course, Dutch schools will still be able to use the Chrome browser and the Chrome OS operating system, but this will be done with the restrictions imposed by the Dutch government on these platforms.

Google Chrome is a multi-platform web browser developed by Google. It was first developed in 2008 for Microsoft Windows with free software components of Apple WebKit and Mozilla Firefox. It was later ported to Linux, MacOS, iOS, and Android, where it is the default browser on the operating system. The browser is also a core component of Chrome OS, where it serves as a platform for web applications.

Most of Chrome's source code comes from the free and open source Google Chromium project, but Chrome is licensed as proprietary free software. WebKit was the original rendering engine, but Google eventually changed it to create the Blink engine; all versions of Chrome except iOS now use Blink.

As of July 2021, Statcounter estimates that Chrome has 65% of the world's browser market share (after reaching 72.38% in November 2018) on personal computers (PC), mostly used on tablets (overtaking Safari). And it also dominates smartphones with 63.59% across all operating systems. Because of this success, Google has extended the "Chrome" brand to other products: Chrome OS, Chromecast, Chromebook, Chromebit, Chromebox. and chrome base.
